Typically, three criteria are used to evaluate open or digital education resources and practices: Is the resource or practice effective? Is it efficient? Is it engaging? In this webinar, I will argue that we need to expand our evaluation criteria. We should devote the same energy and resources to asking, Is the resource or practice equitable? “Good” open and digital education requires equity to be centred. In addition to proposing an evaluation framework, I will use past research to give examples of how a focus on equity invites us to reconsider research and practice.

Dr. George Veletsianos is originally from Cyprus, but now lives in Victoria, where he is a full professor in the School of Education and Technology at Royal Roads University. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Technology and a Commonwealth of Learning Chair in Open and Distance Learning. Dr. Veletsianos has been designing, developing, and evaluating digital learning environments since 2004. His research aims to understand and improve teaching, learning, and participation in digital learning environments. His interests centre around online learning, flexible learning, networked scholarship, open education, and emerging technopedagogical practices. Dr. Veletsianos has written or edited six books and has individually and collaboratively published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. His latest book is Learning Online: The Student Experience (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2020).
