Introduction to Web Scraping with Python
Web scraping is a powerful tool which unlocks doors to new data. This workshop will introduce attendees to some tools and techniques for getting data from web pages using Python, with an emphasis on tools that do not require knowledge of html. We will go through several hands-on examples together, where attendees will gain experience identifying sites with scrapable data, retrieving the data, cleaning it, understanding it, and saving it. After attending this workshop, attendees will have the building blocks for using web scraping in their research, they will have a good idea of what kind of tool to use for a given scraping problem, and they will know when it is legal and ethical to scrape information from a website.
Prerequisites: It is recommended that attendees have some experience with any programming language, but it is not required. Attendees without any programming experience are welcome to attend but may find that the workshop moves too quickly. Attendees do not need any knowledge of html, xml, CSS, etc., or Python - this is an introductory workshop.
This even is part of a TLEF funded Digital Scholarship Workshop series.
