Publishing In the Open: A Discussion on Open Access in Canada

Open access publishing is a rapidly expanding and evolving strategy for making scholarly work globally accessible.   Unlike the traditional scholarly publishing model under which publishers require institutions or individuals to pay for access to these materials, open access provides a model for freely available research outputs to the general public for viewing, and often for reuse.

There is a great deal of activity in Canada that has advanced open access nationally, including publishing bodies and initiatives, and national granting opportunities and requirements. This event will explore opportunities and challenges from the perspective of two significant open access publishing initiatives, the University of Calgary Press and Coalition Publica.

You are invited to join a panel discussion with Brian Scrivener (University of Calgary Press) and Jessica Clark (Coalition Publica) that will address advancements and setbacks for open access publishing in Canada.

Panelists

Brian Scrivener, Director of the University of Calgary Press

Since 2015, Brian Scrivener has been Director of the University of Calgary Press. Prior to that, he worked in the BC College of Open Learning at Thompson Rivers University and with trade and academic publishers in Vancouver.

Jessica Clark, Project Coordinator of Coalition Publica

Jessica Clark is the Project Coordinator of Coalition Publica, a partnership between Érudit and the Public Knowledge Project to advance research dissemination and digital scholarly publishing in Canada. While her current work focuses on journal publishing, her background is in scholarly book publishing, with previous positions at the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP) and the University of Ottawa Press. Open Access has been a theme common to all her professional work to date.
