Understanding Spatial Data: Map Projections

Understanding Spatial Data: Map Projections

This workshop will familiarize participants with foundational knowledge about map projections for working with spatial data. By the end of the workshop participants will understand map projections, coordinate systems, how to find the coordinate reference system of data, and how to change a dataset’s coordinate system. We will conduct three short exercises using the desktop GIS software ArcGIS Pro.

To do before the workshop:

Students can either use own installation of ArcGIS Pro (uses a Windows operating system), or log into a virtual machine in the Digital Scholarship lab with remotelabs.ubc.ca (requires a UBC CWL for log in). It is also okay to just follow along. If you would like to do the exercises, you will need to download data and project files and extract the compressed files into your Downloads folder. If using remotelabs.ubc.ca, be sure to download your data on the remote machine.
