SUMMARY:Writing in STEM: Rewriting for Clarity in Complexity
DESCRIPTION:Writing at the graduate level involves bringing complex and
technical ideas together\, through layers of description\, causation\,
correlation and more. Articulating this complexity in writing is difficult
and requires many drafts and revisions to first elicit the core ideas and
then refine them to be cohesive and comprehensive\; this workshop draws on
research into thesis-drafting and linguistics to share ways of
understanding how to build complexity through language without overwhelming
the reader. With this framework\, you can better understand how to move
your drafts from descriptions of discrete elements to elaborated
articulations of complexity\; and importantly\, you’ll understand how to
unpack your complexity when needed.\n\nFacilitator: Dr. Jodie Martin is an
educational linguist specializing in academic writing\, who currently works
as an Academic English Lecturer in the Science stream at Vantage
 College.\n\nDate & Time: Thursday\, July 28\, 2022: 10:00am – 12:00pm
PT\n\nLocation: IKBLC\, Level 3\, Dodson Room\n\nThe Centre for Writing and
Scholarly Communication does not record workshops or share workshop
slides.\n\nQuestions about this event? Please contact the Centre for
