German and Germanophone Colonial Legacies: Ending the Silence

From March 27 to May 27th, come by the main floor of Koerner Library to explore the exhibition "German and Germanophone Colonial Legacies: Ending the Silence."

UBC student researchers from the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies (CENES) have curated this exhibition of essential questions that can help decolonize German cultural history and account for Germans’ role in colonial projects—whether as part of settlement and displacement/genocide in Indigenous Canada, in German language teaching approaches, in Holocaust memory and the Third Reich, in race theory and eugenics, or in contemporary literature, art, and photography. Can you name more than five countries that Germany once held as a colonial possession? How did those lands get out from under German imperial rule? What is the complex legacy today of Germany’s imperial aspirations since the 19th century? Come learn from the posters and materials created by CENES students.

A book display will be up as of March 27th. Student posters will be displayed starting on April 3rd.
