Information for Participants

This workshop provides an overview of the principles and practices of data visualization. We are going to cover some of the most commonly used approaches and techniques for making clear visuals from messy data.

This is an introductory level workshop that does not require any programming knowledge or experience with a specific software. However, in this series, we also offer workshops that introduce how to work with popular visualization tools, including R and Tableau. More details below.

The workshop will be one hour long, followed by an optional 30-minute period to reinforce what you learned or consult with the instructors. Workshop materials are available at https://ubc-library-rc.github.io/basics_of_data_viz/

About this workshop series

Principles of Data Visualization is one in a series of Data Visualization workshops offered by the UBC Library Research Commons. Each one-hour session introduces principles and/or tools used for data visualization. The series' goal is to introduce participants to the data visualization potential of R and Tableau, and to encourage further self-paced exploration. Other workshops in the series offered this term are:
