Writing a Personal Statement: Crafting Your Professional Identity

Getting ready to apply for grad school or a professional program? Your personal statement is more than a story. It's your first step in shaping how you're seen as a future scholar or professional. But what does it mean to be “personal” in an academic context? This workshop unpacks what makes a compelling personal statement, drawing on research to explore how applicants craft relevant, discipline-aware identities. You’ll learn how to balance personal narrative with professional purpose, use language strategically, and present a version of yourself that resonates with your field.
