Storying the Global (High) North | Anthropology Colloquium Series

The Arctic and sub-Arctic have often suffered from being outside the realm of experience for most and/or emptied of its human inhabitants and exoticized through intrepid explorations and parachute journalists and scientists. While the past couple decades have seen climate change narratives recast the Arctic and sub-Arctic as frontline regions facing the earliest and starkest of climate impacts, Northern communities and perspectives are largely glossed over or ignored completely in stories about the North, with few exceptions. This talk draws on analyses of recent media coverage and ethnographic research among Arctic and northern journalists in the Canadian Territories, Alaska, and Norway who are effectively re-storying what it means to think about and live in the North in order to serve interconnected and interdependent communities rapidly adapting to changing social, political, and physical conditions.
